The Mission of the Continuing Education Committee is to provide NAAP members and members of the professional psychoanalytic community at large with seminars, workshops, and programs concerning educational, scientific, cultural, or artistic topics relevant to psychoanalysis that will advance the profession of psychoanalysis and promote the professional development of the individual. These include: 1) New theoretical and clinical perspectives as they develop in the field of psychoanalysis; 2) Research findings that validate or challenge psychoanalytic theory and practice; 3) Reviews, comparisons, and contrasts between classical psychoanalytic concepts and other existing or developing schools of thought; 4) Artistic and cultural developments relevant to psychoanalysis. |

Cultural Affairs Committee |
Mission |
The Cultural Affairs Committee provides a venue for NAAP and its membership to address public, professional, and social issues in our culture today, from a psychoanalytic perspective. Through these arenas this committee seeks to structure and create opportunities for NAAP and the profession of psychoanalysis to achieve a voice of recognition for psychoanalysis as a direct expression and practice within the field of mental health. The Cultural Affairs Committee serves as a critical voice in our culture for human concerns at large. The committee is compromised of NAAP members, including regional representatives, in balance with members from outside the profession of psychoanalysis who represent a variety of expressions of culture. This committee seeks persons with professional backgrounds representing the academy, religious institutions, business interests, media, the arts, and social/political concerns who themselves share an interest in promoting greater public awareness for psychoanalysis. The purpose of this mix of backgrounds is to foster an exchange between psychoanalysis and other professions with the aim of discovering ways in which our profession can achieve a clearer sense of its mission in our culture today. |

Gradiva Awards Committee |
Mission |
The awards were inspired by Freud's DELUSIONS AND DREAMS IN JENSENS's GRADIVA (1907(1905)) in which he stated, "Creative writers are valuable allies and their evidence is to be prized highly, for they are apt to know a whole host of things between heaven and earth of which our philosophy has not yet let us dream" they draw upon sources which we have not yet opened up for science." Recalling Freud's words, NAAP established the Gradiva Awards to honor our "valuable allies" including poets, artists, producers, directors, publishers, etc., who have created works that advance Psychoanalysis. Each winner receives a handsome brass plaque etched with the image of Gradiva, which is based on a Pompeian relief similar to one that hung in Freud's office. An additional award plus a $500 scholarship is also given for the best student work that advances Psychoanalysis. The awards are presented at a ceremony during the annual NAAP conference in New York City. |
