Membership Level: “Psychoanalyst”
1. Psychoanalyst
A Psychoanalyst is a certified graduate as a psychoanalyst from an accredited institute or equivalent institute or program. The following minimum requirements must be met:
- Accredited Master's degree
- Minimum of 300 hours personal (individual) analysis with a certified psychoanalyst who meets NAAP standards
- 50 hours of supervision on one case with a certified psychoanalyst/supervisor
- Minimum of 100 hours additional supervision, not necessarily on one case, 50 of which must be with a second supervisor. (Each supervisor shall be a certified psychoanalyst and shall have a minimum of 5 years of experience in the practice of psychoanalysis.) No supervisor may be one's personal analyst.
- 300 hours of supervised clinical experience.
- 36 credit hours (Carnegie Units) of courses on theory and technique.

2. Distinguished
- Limited to people within the psychoanalytic field who have made a significant contribution to the field of psychoanalysis
- Will be conferred by the Membership Registration Committee
- Member will be listed in the Registry as "Distinguished"

3. Emeritus
- Member applies for this category
- Must be retired from practice
- Must have been a member for 20 years
- Has made a significant contribution to NAAP and to the profession of psychoanalysis
- Will be listed in the Registry as "Emeritus"
- Will be eligible to vote and to hold office
- All former "honorary" and/or "lifetime" members of NAAP have been transferred to this category.

4. Honorary
- Limited to people outside the psychoanalytic field whose work has supported the field of psychoanalysis
- Will be conferred by the Membership Registration Committee
- Member will be listed in the Registry as "Honorary"

5. Retired
- Member must apply for this category
- Must be fully retired from practice (with waiver of NAAP insurance and NAAP responsibility)
- May serve on committees of NAAP
- Will be listed in the Registry as "Retired"
